Story behind the genesis of the portal

Alcohol Web India was developed by National Drug Dependence Treatment Center (NDDTC), All India Institute of Medical Sciences as part of a multi-country initiative by The World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva to develop a generic web-portal to address problem alcohol use in 2009. This portal was envisaged to be a one stop shop for almost all the information requirement about problem alcohol use, which would cater to a wide variety of audience (general public, alcohol users, family members of alcohol users, policy makers and health professionals). The first e-Health meeting to introduce the concept was held in Amsterdam in December 2009 which was attended by mental health professionals from India, Belarus, Brazil, Mexico and World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva. A subsequent meeting was held in September 2010 to plan the execution of the E-Health Web Portals on alcohol use.

The software for the generic e-Health portal was designed by Trimbos Instituut, Netherlands with inputs regarding its designing, features and content from team of professionals from India, Belarus, Mexico, Brazil and the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva. A series of web-conferences among team members to discuss functional and intellectual issues as well as numerous user tests have helped shape the generic web portal. This initiative is still ongoing and will continue in the future to further refine the content and functionalities of the generic web portal. Each country has adapted the generic e-health portal and at present there are independent country portals for India, Mexico, Belarus and Brazil next to the generic portal of the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva
