Risk Factors for Alcohol Dependence

There are certain risk factors, which may influence a person’s drinking pattern and may determine if he or she is at a risk for alcohol dependence.

Some of these risk factors are:

  • Family history of alcohol use
  • Psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression
  • Medical conditions like chronic pain
  • Curiosity, novelty seeking
  • Poor impulse control
  • Poor stress management
  • Trauma or loss
  • Peer pressure
  • Interpersonal problems with family members or others
  • Low self esteem
