Adolescent Alcohol Use

Some children and adolescents start using alcohol at a very early age and are at a risk of developing physical and psychological problems earlier.

Reasons for drinking at a young age are:

  • Experimentation or novelty seeking
  • Peer pressure
  • Family problems
  • Low self esteem
  • Aggression
  • Parents or siblings using alcohol
  • Anxiety
  • Depression


Problems or risks faced by adolescents due to problem alcohol use are

  • Poor academic performance
  • Behavioral problems like getting into fights with peers
  • Less interest in other activities or appearance
  • Coordination problems
  • Memory problems
  • Injuries
  • Sexual abuse
